How bout that ride in.

Leave it to me to start packing less than 12 hours before I'm leaving. I didn't think I had as much stuff as I really did. Two duffle bags full of close, a vera bradley weekend bag... actually two vera bradley weekend bags but one just had my clothes in it for the hotel. A box with just my boots, a box with my ranch things, couple pillows, a box with just the little things...toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo & conditioner...those things. I had a laundry basket, hangers, and what not all in the bed of the truck. Now up front in the cab behind my seats I had the more important things like.. my two cowboy hats, my saddle, my rope, our bag of food, and our computers. My saddle was the first thing I packed and I made sure it went up front.

Soo we jumped in the car at 10:45am and headed down the road for Colorado. We stopped right outside of Indianapolis for lunch at Mcdonalds, checked our email, made a few CDs, and then we were on the road again. We didn't make very many stops if we didnt have too unless to use the bathroom and we made it to Des Moines, Iowa at 7:20pm Saturday night. We checked into our hotel room and was dying of hunger since we hadnt eaten anything since lunch. We stopped at the Panda Buffet for dinner ... now thats a story by itself. I had my little plate of honey chicken, noodles, and ride. Keaton has one plate full of just chicken and another plate with noodles, an oyster shell with cheese and a crawl fish. The crawl fish was the whole body alone.. I didn't know how you ate it and he sure as hell didn't know so he saved it for last. We tried calling Colae to see if she knew cause shes from Florida and eats those things. Well she didn't answer at first so Keaton ate everything that looked like meat. Even the part under the tail that WASNT suppose to be eaten. We finished up dinner and headed back to the hotel. Shortly after we returned to the hotel Colae called back. I asked her how you eat a crawl fish and to our knowledge you crack it open and eat what is in the shell. The part under the tail is the poo... fried poo as Colae said. It was around 930 and we were just watching tv and I fell asleep.

We started Sunday morning a little earlier than Saturday so we could get to Denver earlier. We got up at 830 showered, eat a hot buffet breakfast, and got back on the road. We stopped for lunch in Lincoln, Nebraska at Mcdonalds again to check email and got back on the road. We drove straight through from Lincoln to Denver just taking a few bathroom breaks on the way. We ended up in Sterling, Colorado around 430 checked out the town and found my dorm room and got back on the road. Keatons family was waiting for us to eat dinner at his house and we got into town around 630. It felt great to finally make it to Denver and be done driving for the night. We both were soo exhausted again we ended up going to bed around 930 again.

Today we got and had breakfast with his family again and headed out to the Stock Show for the day. We ended up going to Shelpers western store and then go a barn to pick up Keatons saddle. Im now sitting at his house again finishing this up relaxing. I head back to Sterling in the morning to move into the dorm and schedule my classes for school. Its still unbelievable that I am officially in Colorado.

Kentucky to Colorado

I'm Courtney and I've lived in Kentucky,or as some people know it the Bluegrass State, for 21 years now. I grew up in Cold Spring, KY for all of my life. I went to grade school at St. Joes Cold Spring , High School at Notre Dame Academy and for the last 3 years I've spent my college days at Gateway Community College not knowing what I wanted to major in.

Back in High School I started traveling out west on vacation to Dude Ranches. I spent a week in 2005 in Montana, 2006 in Wyoming, and 2007 in Wyoming again. After being in those states I wanted to travel to Colorado to see what that was like.In 2008 I found myself working as a Wrangler at Tarryall River Ranch. What I thought then was the BEST summer I've ever spent anywhere. I made friends with the other staff members from that summer and friends with the guest from all over the world. Literally, I have more friends from other states and countries than I do in KY. I rode a horse named Reba that first summer and I honestly think to this day she was the best instructor I've ever had. I was bound and determind to buy her...well that didn't happen so I knew I had to come back.

Well, low and behold, May 15, 2009 I was boarding a plane to fly back to Colorado to work as a wrangler again! I got into Colorado Springs Airport friday evening to find Kevin, the owner, waiting to take me back to the ranch! I lived in what we call the Wrangler Pad all summer long with my 3 roommates Maddie, Colae and Julie. That consisted of 3 sets of bunk beds, 6 dressers, and a small bathroom for us.

Keaton and Andy were the other two wranglers for the summer and Allie was the kids counselor/wrangler. I rode Reba again for the second summer and mid July I bought her. I left the ranch in August this time with more memories and friends. I came home and continued training my 2 year old filly and soon after classes started. Some of the staff members came to visit me once I got home and I made a trip to Florida. November rolled around and I wasn't sure what I wanted to do anymore....

Keaton had told me about Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado and about their Equine Management Program. Ranching and working horses has become a passion of mine and I know I could do it for the rest of my life. I applied to the College and to my suprise I was accepted. I had orginally enrolled to start in Fall of 2010 but I didnt want to wait that long till I got back out to Colorado. I am leaving for Colorado January 16th 2010 with Keaton to drive out to Sterling where I will start school. My plans for now are to go to school and then go work at the ranch for my 3rd summer! And guess what?! Maddie is coming back also! After I graduate, I plan on staying in Colorado or at least out west to work.

I will try update my blog every couple days or after something exciting happens. I will post something new with pictures of the road trip to Colorado once I get there.
